"Being in Seattle has been so amazing. It’s always important to step outside of your reality, experience a new place, and allow yourself to evaluate what you have accomplished thus far. But with that, I can’t help but continue to think about some of the realities that continue to puzzle me.
The fact that places like The Tenderloin and Skid Row have been “famous” for their poverty, drug use, and rampant homelessness for decades, yet are located in or close to areas where millions of dollars are generated is one of the clearest signs that the US has some of its priorities extremely twisted.
I’m waiting for the day when places like this are only memories in our history books and used as a reflection on how far we’ve come as a people, community, and nation.
I know we all can’t fight every cause, but we all CAN continue to stay conscious.”
The above is an excerpt from my recent Facebook post. It was one of my many observations of the world we live in. While there are an abundance of beautiful aspects that many of us get to experience daily, I always want to stay mindful that we as a people have a long way to go.
I am not one to constantly complain about everything that is wrong in the world, because I don’t have a solution for everything. However, I want to continue to plant the seed of positivity and awareness, so that as a nation we can hopefully start thinking as a unit, rather than as separate departments of a corporation.
It is not about how we can make the biggest difference, influencing the most people, in the shortest of time. It all starts internally… with yourself. Using a small portion of our brain space to stay conscious, so that we can try to make better decisions, ask better questions, demand better and more sustainable results. Your consciousness will start to present itself in your actions, you speech, and in how you choose to use your time.
The relevant will soon become irrelevant because reality will soon sink in that what is currently relevant has been irrelevant the whole time. Confused? Let me elaborate. The fact that when I opened Facebook recently and in my newsfeed there was a petition circulating to get Justin Beiber’s deporation issue in front of the POTUS. It is “issues” like this that are taking away from coverage or REAL issues. Entertainment has become our reality, the industry we are continuously funding. All the while people are living in boxes under bridges, health care costs are outrageous, programs for underserved youth are hard to sustain, and we are still fighting a “war” on drugs.
The realities of realty are some big pills to swallow. Fortunately they’re chewables so we can take them one bite at a time.
My only advice to stay aware. Don’t let yourself get confused by what you see on television and in the media. Realize your reality. Be inspired by your surroundings. Live your legacy.
Always remember… destiny is a creation from within.
